For the last couple years I have been a loyal user of the free graphics program Picnik. So much of a fan that I have paid for this premium service a couple times. I use Picnik often, sometimes multiple times a day to do basic image edits and other fun stuff.
I was VERY sad when I read earlier this month that Picnik is closing on April 19, 2012. With such a wonderful service, I still cannot believe that I won’t be able to use it for that much longer. Since I heard the news, I have been looking for a replacement. I have been looking for programs that are FREE, easy to use and offer the features that I have been using.
I have found a few alternatives to Picnik that you might want to try:
- Be Funky – This is online graphics editor similar to Picnik that has both a free and paid version.
- PhotoScape – A free graphics program that needs to be downloaded, but easy to use.
- PIXLR Express – Another online graphics program that is free and easy to use.
Now these are just a few graphics programs out there that are free and easy to use. These are programs that I am currently using and trying to figure out before I won’t be able to use my favorite features on Picnik. I figure I better try and get prepared now before I am scrambling at the last minute for another program to use.
While I like the online photo editors, I have had some fun with PhotoScape which requires you to download their program. Check out my post I did last week using a picture of the sky and using PhotoScape to make edits. I am also really liking Be Funky, but it doesn’t do the photo collages like Picnik does.
What are you going to use to edit your images on April 20?

This is great suggestions. I am always looking for different ways to get good pictures on my site. Greatly appreciate it!
I’m so sad Picnik is going away. I loved the ability to do collages on there. Do you know if any of these have the same option? Thank you for this post!
I sometimes use Paint.net or Gimp, both downloaded yet free programs. A few months back I also discovered Photoscape and I love it! It’s fun to make collages and the editing tools are just enough to not be overwhelming!
oh thank you these sound like great replacements I need to check them out
I thought I heard a rumor that Picniks abilities were going to be housed on G+? Is this unfounded?
Thanks! I had actually just discovered Picnik a few weeks before they announced the closing. Grrrr.
Great suggestions!!! I’ll have to check them out. I’m so mad at Picnik. ***sobs***
These are the best ones I have found as well. I really love Photoscape…it does some really neat things!
Picnik is closing the day before my birthday. I take this to mean that Google hates me. Thanks for sharing alternatives!
